Work Smarter, Not Harder

What Can You Do To Work Smarter Not Harder?

You've likely heard this phrase before, but if you are in business for yourself, then chances are this is a pipe dream, true story? It's all very well talking of working smarter not harder but exactly how can you do this?

In this article, we’re going to walk you through proven tips that will help take you from "I'm working 14-hour days and getting nowhere" to "I have enough time to enjoy life alongside my business"

1 – Keep It Small!

You’ve probably heard that taking small daily actions is the way to experience success in anything you want to do. This is very true for many aspects of life, including your business; and this is especially true if your business involves working with clients individually or in groups. You need to find people who need your services, yes?

The actions that get results are consistent, small steps that you take each day. Keeping the tasks small not only makes it easier to focus on what is needed; but also make it far more likely that you will actually get started on the task and hence finish it; and when you regularly complete the tasks you need to do to build your business, you cannot help but grow.

Doing the right things each day pays off in many ways if you run your own coaching business, counselling practice, or work by yourself and need to find clients regularly in order to thrive. Taking small daily steps to get your message out to your audience will directly affect your income as well provide great value to your target audience.

2 – Don’t Make It Too Complicated

Running a successful private practice is not complicated. Almost any qualified coach or therapist can do it. Sadly, so many people do make it complicated.

Even though it’s nice having awesome technology to help you get things done, it’s not required. You don’t need special landing page software, or to worry about complicated algorithms to be successful. You need to know how to find and connect with potential clients then build a relationship with them so that when they need help it is you they turn to and work with.

Make technology work for you. It is there to make things easier not more complicated. Taking the time at the start of your business to establish automated processes will take the headache out of marketing in the long run, and give you the time you want to work with your clients and enjoy your family and hobbies.

3 – Do Your Business-Building Activities First

Often, I find, people in the helping industry find it distasteful to talk about making money. However, it can be helpful to remember that your business cannot exist if you don’t earn money. If your business does not exist then you can not provide the support and help that your clients deserve and need.

Therefore, make a list of activities you do in your business that can directly be credited with growing your business. These will be the activities that attract clients to your door.

I would also recommend creating some passive income streams as well to give you extra security and take away the desperation from the client sign-up call.

4 – Keeping Up with Your Data

As well as focusing on small activities to find clients, it's also important to keep up with your data. As the saying goes, "If you don't measure it how will you know if it is paying off". This is an area I failed to keep up with for years at the start of my business. So when you create a call to action, make sure you can measure the results. How many people are seeing your content? How many are clicking on your buttons? and how many of those become clients?

If you don’t track and measure, you’re only working on assumptions, and that’s not going to work long term.

5 – Always Be Marketing

You’ve probably heard this before, but you should spend more time marketing than doing anything else in your business. Of course, thankfully, you can outsource a lot of tasks to help you with this and you can use technology to automate many of the steps. But there isn’t a day that goes by where you shouldn’t be marketing. That may consist of publishing a new article, a white paper, or running a membership drive. Use some of the many scheduling tools available to reduce your efforts here. For example, set aside one day a month to create your content and schedule its release through the month. That way you serve your audience by providing them with regular content, and also give yourself time to focus on your clients and life.

6. Schedule Everything

To ensure that you do the things you need to do to grow your business and get smarter about marketing, it’s a good idea to use your calendar to schedule everything you are going to do. That way, when you go to work, you simply open your calendar and get started on those tasks. Consistency is the key to success.

Use a strategy such as "Success Six" (or five or three) where you schedule just six tasks that you must do that day, if you make each task no longer than 20-minutes the chances are you will get all six done.

How much progress could you make if you did six marketing activities each day for the next month?
